The answer is No! Police Chaplains are volunteers, I am a volunteer. However, not just anyone can become a volunteer police Chaplain.
There is an extensive background check, a polygraph, an educational requirement and an ecclesiastical endorsement. Some are retired, but most often they serve Police in addition to their full time job. This is an incredible service to our police, but it is also limiting. I am not retired and have chosen to pursue this calling full time.
Chaplains earn trust through time and presence. Police officers nor those who support their agencies work a normal schedule and that is exactly why I formed Paraclete. I wanted to make sure that I could be available anytime and anywhere I was needed, without being limited to the demands of another calling.
I can be out all day on a ride along and then out all night on a critical incident. I can grab coffee with an officer when they get off shift whether that is 1pm. or 1am. This availability has proven to be key to the fast acceptance and response by the agencies I serve
My wife and I believed that full time availability was so important we were willing to risk our own finances along with a small but very special group of individuals that risked with us to place me in that car, at that station, on that scene, or at that coffee shop anytime I was needed for the last 4 months. We now know that this risk has more than proven itself.
“How are you able to do this for us?” is the question I get from officers, staff and family. Then I get to share this powerful answer…”because there are people out their who care about you and want to support you, and so they put me here to serve you and your agency.” I wish everyone could see their response. They are stunned, thankful, and often moved to know how much people really do care for them and their families.
Join the adventure of Paraclete and keep this Pastoral, Spiritual and Professional support available when they need it, without delay, night or day.
We can only do this because of special people willing to join with us to keep us serving within this very unique community.
